Symposium
2008: Responding to the Erotic Transference March 8th & 9th, 2008 |
The Bride of the Wind,
Oskar Kokoschka, 1918
MUST ALL PATIENTS FALL IN LOVE WITH THEIR ANALYSTS? Is it desirable for such intense feelings to emerge, and if so how do we guard against boundary violations and encourage the healthy resolution of erotic wishes? What happens when positive transference and working alliance turn into a lust that threatens to destroy the treatment? How does an erotic transference emerge, and why does it sometimes become an obsession that destroys rational thought? What makes an analyst act out desires that have gotten out of control? Or lose objectivity and become involved with a patient? How can incestuous wishes for inappropriate objects be resolved? Above all, how can such erotic forces be used productively in analysis to further a patient's capacity to be appropriately loved and loving in the real world? Using a segment of the very popular Israeli TV series In Treatment as a starting point, this conference will explore the erotic transference from many different points of view. Creators of the "In Treatment" series and a group of outstanding clinicians will explore how to make the analytic situation safe, and how the media portray our field. Please join us.
